Urine drug screening

These days some employers request employees to submit their urine sample for drug screening. Usually on random basis employees are instructed to go to a urine collection site. When the urine is collected in specially designed cups; then cups are sealed with a tamper resistant tape. Collected cups are directed by express delivery service to a drug testing professional laboratory.

For drug testing dividing the urine into two aliquots is the first step at the testing facility. As the initial screen one aliquot is used for immunoassay using a special analyzer. In a case of positive urine screen readings, another aliquot of the specimen to confirm the results. This time gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) methodology is applied. Test results are passed to Medical Review Office (MRO) and a medical professional staff reviews the results.

If the results are negative, MRO staff informs the employer that employee has no detectable drug residues in the urine specimen, so he’s clean. If the results of the immunoassay and GC-MS are positive, MRO staff contacts the employee and tries to clear up why he has positive findings. It is not correct to claim a person with positive finding a drug user, because positive finding could be a result of a specific medical treatment or diet or some other reasons.

It is quite problematic for MRO to verify exactly if a certain employee takes drugs or not. Most employees are not chemists, and have no precise idea which substances might create a false positive screen finding. Without understanding, they may forget to mention all the medications, food, drinks they consume; thus leading to the incorrect report of a positive result. And non-drug users whose results are reported as positive can’t find explanation for the error. They will be reported as drug users to the employer and possibly will get to the court.

Conversely, drug users may claim that they use hemp seeds cosmetic products or have been cooking with hemp oil; they can say they drink coca tea; there are a lot of plausible explanations for the positive result. In a case if MRO will prove that the positive result relates to drug consumption, member of staff will inform the employer of the positive result. According to statistics about 5% of the urine specimens tested in the USA provides positive results for drugs.
