Articles > Holistic DetoxHolistic Detox Detoxification is not just a dramatic one-time happening, it's an ongoing process. You don’t need to go to expensive spa resorts to detoxify yourself, a lot of work you can do at home by taking a closer look at what you put in -- and on -- your body; just be more attentive to what you eat. Alexandra Jamieson, the author of "The Great American Detox Diet," had the unprecedented detox challenge after her boyfriend Morgan Spurlock made a documentary film called "Super Size Me." For 30 days he ate nothing but McDonald's fast food, gaining 25 pounds. Quickly he developed health problems, such as headaches, mood swings, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression and liver problems. Alex is a holistic health counselor and natural foods chef. To help Morgan purify his organism once filming was over she developed an eight-week home detoxing program. These are her cleansing recommendations: 1. Drink eight to ten glasses of pure water every day. This flushes body systems and replaces the water the body loses through respiration and elimination. 2. Refrain from protein overdosing. Eat less meat and dairy, especially factory-farmed products loaded with antibiotics and hormones. Focus on non-animal sources of protein. 3. Refrain from sugar and refined carbohydrates (white flour). They provide sugar "high" that leaves you hungry and craving more sweets. There are sugar substitutes like honey, maple or agaves nectar. 4. Reduce toxins intake by reevaluating the products you use everyday at home. Green your beauty routine and your kitchen. 5. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant to your central nervous system, so please try your best in breaking caffeine habit. 6. Avoid unhealthy saturated fats and hydrogenated fats, shift them for healthy fats. Walnuts and unrefined flax seed oils contain essential fatty acids. 7. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Whole grains, fresh organic fruits and vegetables are high in complex carbohydrates. Fiber facilitates a healthy digestive system. 8. Commit to "detox lifestyle". Practice mindful eating. Purify organism with saunas, steam, massage, skin brushing, colonics, and epsom salt baths. Devote yourself to meditation, yoga, laughter, visualization, short and long-term goal-setting and relationship building.
